Tips

Here are some suggestions to help you learn and grow as a Teen for Planet Earth throughout high school and prepare for a career in conservation. Good Luck!

  • Embrace math and science. Seriously, love it. Take biology, chemistry, and physics in high school. If your high school offers elective courses in the environmental sciences, take them. And don't forget math. Ask any scientist what it takes to be successful in science, and having a strong background in math will probably be on their list.
  • Become a know-it-all. Read the news, either online or in a newspaper, or listen to news radio. Check out our News section. The environment and conservation movement is affected by lots of things, including political circumstances, major weather events, among other stuff. Staying abreast of current events makes you a better environmentalist.
  • Start your college search, like, now. Even if you're just starting high school, the more research you do now, the easier it will be for you later to decide if and where you want to apply. Going to a school that offers environmental and conservation programs will allow you the chance to take some of those classes, meet other green-minded students, and a lot more.
  • Volunteer your services Many nature centers and environmental organizations offer fun and educational programs for free or for just a few dollars. Be sure to document everything you do so you can include your experiences in college and job applications. One thing though - don't overload yourself with too many different commitments. If you choose one or two activities you really enjoy you'll make the most of them, rather than trying to do a dozen things that all start to feel like...well... work.
  • Think Globally, Act Locally Yeah, it's a cliché, but we love it 'cause it's true! You can make a real impact on your community, your environment, and yourself. Get started on that new project, network with others in your area, make a difference!

"Hi Divyanshu, I love red pandas, and I'm glad you seem to like them too. They are decreasing in number, which is why conservation organizations need to work to protect them and their habitat. Thanks for spreading the word!"
